Rising Star takes Victorian Formula Ford title
The CAMS Rising Star Program has furthered its reputation for facilitating the progress of young Australian motor racing talent, after 18 year old karting graduate Garry Jacobson took victory in the Victorian Formula Ford Championship at the weekend.
The Shepparton native drove his Minda Motorsport prepared Spectrum intelligently at Phillip Island's fourth and final round, with fifth place in both races enough to seal the crown for Duratec powered cars.
Jacobson's victory continues a great year for the Australian Motor Sport Foundation, whose International Rising Star drivers have also tasted success in the United Kingdom and United States of America.
"Everyone at the AMSF is extremely proud of what Garry and the Minda Motorsport team have achieved by winning the 2010 Victorian Formula Ford State Championship," said AMSF General Manager Martin Stillman.
"Garry is a very deserving winner and has a great future in motorsport ahead of him.
"He has shown us he has the determination, focus and hard work required to get the job done both on and off the track."
Minda Motorsport team principal Bruin Beasley was equally pleased with the championship win, which came after a mixed weekend for the team.
Race 2 had to be red flagged and eventually cancelled after fellow CAMS Rising Star driver Liam Sager made heavy contact with the inside wall at Siberia corner.
Thankfully Sager emerged unscathed from the incident, which was triggered by minor contact with Jacobson.
"It has been an up and down weekend for the team, and I am very happy that Garry was able to win the championship for CAMS, the AMSF, and the whole Minda Motorsport team," said Beasely.
"Garry has had a great year, and has won this championship with a great mix of speed and consistency.
"His win at Sandown in May was outstanding, and it's fantastic for Minda Motorsport to be able to work with the AMSF in helping such talented young drivers achieve success."
For Jacobson, the Phillip Island weekend was about remaining mistake free – not a simple task on such a fast and daunting circuit.
"It's great to be able to win this championship – a big thanks must go to the whole CAMS Rising Star / Minda Motorsport team," he said.
"I knew we could win if I made no mistakes, so I made it my goal at the start of the weekend to finish every race and collect points.
"It's a great feeling right now, and it's a real confidence boost heading into the next stage of my career."
Jack Le Brocq's Phillip Island weekend also ended on a positive note, with second place in the non-points scoring Race 4.
Earlier, the 18 year old recovered from a Race 1 DNF to finish sixth in Race 3, crossing the line directly behind team-mate Jacobson.
The CAMS Rising Stars are proudly supported by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport, the Australian Sports Commission, Minda Motorsport, Penrite Oils, OAMPS Insurance Brokers, Boylan Traffic Solutions, Relux Slabs, Revolution Racegear, LCF Merchandise and Mark Webber.
